Netflix Animation formally revealed another Cyberpunk-themed partnership with CD Projekt Red during tonight’s Geeked Week live event, but they did not specify what it will entail.
Watch the tiny teaser below, confirming a “return to Night City.” The streaming service just asks users to “keep tuned” otherwise.
The news is exciting, but it should not be a big surprise. While remaining ambiguous, CD Projekt Red hinted at “absolutely” developing future Cyberpunk-themed animation projects during last month’s most recent earnings conference.
At the time, joint CEO Michał Nowakowski told investors, “We are aiming to do more in terms of animation with Cyberpunk so I think that is enough as an answer.” “There will be more to come, but that is as far as I can go at this time.”
The first project that CD Projekt Red and Netflix worked on together was Cyberpunk Edgerunners, which premiered in September 2022 to great reviews from both critics and fans. It stoked renewed interest in Cyberpunk 2077, with viewers demanding a second season.
Though it is important to note that neither Netflix nor CD Projekt Red have disclosed if this “return to Night City” would be an Edgerunners Season 2—Nowakowski’s earlier remarks raised hopes for such. A second season of that animated series was not exactly guaranteed, and Netflix Animation might very well tell a different tale in a universe where the cyberpunk setting is just one of many possible settings.
Of course, until we learn more, it is just conjecture. “Delivers a rewarding return to Night City that does a better job understanding why Mike Pondsmith’s famed location became so memorable in the first place,” we wrote in our 9/10 review of Cyberpunk Edgerunners.
