Carmen Sandiego, a single-player puzzle-adventure game relaunched from the 1980s and 1990s, is a big edutainment hit, according to Gameloft and HarperCollins Productions. This one will debut on Netflix in Q1 of 2025 and then on PC (via Steam), PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch later that same quarter. It is based on an original 1980s intellectual property (although it visually resembles the recent Netflix animated series that ran from 2019 to 2021 – and on a related note, the publishers note that a live-action Carmen Sandiego movie is also in the works at Netflix). There will be “traditional modes” and a story-driven campaign, according to Gameloft and HarperCollins (more on that below). View the initial teaser above, and the initial screenshots may be found in the picture gallery below.

To combat the villainous VILE, you will get to play as Carmen Sandiego, replete with espionage and high-tech gadgets. The publishers assured us that “in this game, you are not following Carmen—you are Carmen.” Players may now fully immerse themselves in Carmen’s world of espionage and global exploration thanks to the gameplay mechanic that changes from being the pursuer to being Carmen herself.

The Netflix series “Player,” which also alludes to the invisible live-action figure from the 1994 animated series Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego? is the other character you see at the beginning of the teaser. Now, the Player is Carmen’s sidekick. This implies that you play the entire game from Carmen’s point of view, with the Player helping you to complete tasks, figure out riddles, and trick VILE agents.”

When we inquired about the fundamental gameplay and any Easter eggs, the studio replied, “It contains a brand new on-the-ground interactive exploration of cities combined with all of the investigative fun of the original core game loop (gathering clues & following VILE operatives throughout the world).” “The Acme Files, a nostalgic throwback to the Carmen Sandiego games of the 1980s, is another classic option we have added. Fans of the Netflix series and nostalgic gamers alike will also uncover hidden Easter eggs in various game locations—small surprises we can not wait for the community to rediscover!”

As the release date of Carmen Sandiego Q1 2025 approaches, stay tuned for additional information.
