AMD has quietly released its most affordable CPU.

While some of AMD’s new products receive little more than a mention, most receive a full launch ceremony with significant pomp. The Ryzen 5 7400F, which unexpectedly appeared in AMD’s product lineup, exemplifies the latter. As the slowest Ryzen 7000 processor in the group, this member of AMD’s Zen 4 lineup is unlikely to become one of the finest, but there is one feature that might make it a compelling choice.

While AMD’s website showcases the Ryzen 5 7400F in all its splendor, its release date is still unknown, making it somewhat of a mystery. But we do know its specifications. Based on the Raphael architecture, this is a consumer desktop CPU for the AM5 socket rather than an APU. Six cores, twelve threads, and a boost frequency of up to 4.7GHz are features of the Ryzen 5 7400F.

Six-core CPUs are nothing new to AMD; for better or worse, even the Ryzen 5 9600X is still a six-core CPU. The 7400F has 32MB of L3 cache and a thermal design power (TDP) of 65 watts. The Ryzen 5 7500F, which has the same specifications but a higher 5.0GHz boost clock, is not anything that different from it.

Aside from frequency, the 7500F differs from the 7400F in that it was not intended to be offered worldwide outside of prebuilt. Although AMD never formally released it as a consumer product, it is still available for purchase at select stores. The 7400F is slated for “global” availability, which suggests that it will be offered for sale similarly to other AMD CPUs.

Although AMD has mentioned the product, we do not yet know where or when it will be available for purchase. The 7500F costs $162 and is offered for sale on Newegg by independent vendors. Therefore, there would not be much of an incentive for anyone to purchase the Ryzen 5 7400F if it were not even less expensive than that.

If the Ryzen 5 7400F is priced under $150, it might be a popular choice for low-cost PC configurations. It would still be an excellent deal even though the Ryzen 5 7500F does not come with a cooler, thus it would likely be an additional cost. We are forced to wait and watch if the CPU begins to be offered for sale at different stores for the time being.
