Updated Versions of DOOM and DOOM 2 Will Include a New Episode and More

Improved remasters of the first two Doom games are among the announcements incoming for QuakeCon 2024, which officially begins today. The convention usually brings big news and announcements from numerous ZeniMax Media IPs.

The X/Twitter user @Wario64 discovered a new listing on Steam for DOOM + DOOM 2, a new compilation offering updated, definitive versions of the first two DOOM games. This contains the two titles powered by the exclusive KEX Engine, which was also utilized in several other classic shooter re-releases, such as Quake 2021, DOOM 64 (2020), and Quake 2 (2023).

Coming soon to DOOM + DOOM 2 are co-op features for up to 16 players, cross-platform deathmatch, and online play. The re-release will also feature improved graphics, compatibility with contemporary controllers, and a weapon carousel that facilitates quicker weapon switching. There will also be a new Deathmatch map bundle with 25 additional maps.

According to the advertisement, buyers of the compilation will get both games in addition to extra material. Most notably, id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames collaborated on the development of Legacy of Rust, a brand-new episode for DOOM 2.

DOOM + DOOM 2 will likely be the most complete iteration of the venerable shooters available when it launches. Over the years, the series has been reissued and updated numerous times, and it continues to have a devoted following. Among the concepts now in development are a drama series and documentary about DOOM’s original designer, John Romero.

Though a release date is unknown, DOOM + DOOM 2 is expected to be shadow-dropped during QuakeCon. However, this compilation is only one of the upcoming updates for the popular first-person shooter game. DOOM: The Dark Ages, a precursor to the 2016 title Doom, was revealed by id Software in June and is scheduled for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S release at some point in the upcoming year.
