Nintendo’s Wonderful 101 is Acquired by PlatinumGames.

Nintendo sold The Wonderful 101 franchise to PlatinumGames; however, it is unknown if the developer intends to produce more games in the series.

According to VGC, a request for a transfer of ownership of intellectual property (IP) first released on the Nintendo Wii U and later remastered for the Nintendo Switch was made in a document submitted to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. PlatinumGames is identified as the prospective owner, and Nintendo is listed as the present owner.

Since its first release in 2013, The Wonderful 101 has only been available on Nintendo, however, there may be opportunities for that to alter in the future. Having launched series like Bayonetta and Nier abroad, PlatinumGames is no longer a Nintendo-only developer.

However, a multiplatform release might be appealing from a business standpoint, since The Wonderful 101 may not have received as much attention as it should have as a Nintendo and PlatinumGames title. It was well received; Gamexta’s review gave it a 9 out of 10 and referred to it as “one of the best action games of a generation.”

Despite this, it has not had much of an influence. However, last year, PlatinumGames quietly released the After School Hero downloadable content, which was an unexpected expansion.
