Nintendo is teasing a spooky new horror game featuring a creepy man with a smile.

This morning, Nintendo got up and decided to cause chaos by releasing a brief but extremely disturbing teaser for what appears to be a new horror game. Although the name is yet unknown, it might be called Emio or even Smiling Man.

What on earth was that? Fans of Nintendo are perplexed. The description of this “Emio” thing is essentially nonexistent. The only other information we have, aside from the teaser, comes from Nintendo tweeting about it this morning using the hashtag #WhoIsEmio? on its accounts in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Additionally, the official Nintendo website merely has the eerie man standing there with his expression changing every so often. Furthermore, it has been verified that the kanji in the backdrop of each of these teases says “smiling guy” or “laughing man.”

Emio

Why then is this causing such a stir among people? There is nothing particularly strange about teasing a piece of terror like this. Many movies and video games have emphasized the terror element by purposefully giving away details slowly and abruptly. That kind of stuff, meanwhile, is not precisely Nintendo’s specialty! To abruptly and without any explanation to release a trailer for what appears to be an M-rated horror game on a Wednesday morning is just not in line with their usual behavior.

Not even the maker of Emio is known to us. Given that it has an official Nintendo website, some people are conjecturing that this might be a first-party game, which would be even more unusual for Nintendo. Having said that, many people have brought attention to the fact that renowned horror developer Bloober Team just disclosed on social media that it was working on “Project M,” which is purportedly heading to Nintendo platforms and is anticipated to be revealed this year. Is Project M this one? or something completely different?

In any event, we will have to wait and see, but it is thrilling to think that Nintendo, of all businesses, could produce a new horror game. We will have to settle for Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD in the interim.
