In honor of Half-Life 2’s 20th anniversary, Valve is releasing a new documentary and a massive game update.

Today, the studio revealed a gift basket filled with items for new and returning fans on its website, providing them with an update on the festivities. The announcement is sufficient to ease the wait, even though it is not exactly the Half-Life 3 reveal that fans have waited twenty years for.

The most anticipated announcement is a two-hour making-of video from the Half-Life 1 documentary’s Secret Tape crew. For a behind-the-scenes look at how the studio dealt with running out of money, getting hacked, creating its PC retail Steam, and more, Valve says ardent fans may begin seeing the Half-Life 2 documentary today. The celebrations do not end there, though it offers a detailed behind-the-scenes look at a significant turning point in gaming history.

Additional features have been added to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Half-Life 2, such as Steam Workshop support and Steam game recording. There are also general touch-ups and repairs. Aim-assist has been overhauled, horizons have been cleaned up, lighting has been rebalanced, and new graphics settings for effects like fire and blood have been included.

According to the company, “Valve-level designers have examined every map in Half-Life 2 to address long-standing issues, restore content and features that have been lost to time, and enhance a few things like fog and lightmap sharpness.”

Lucky for you, Valve has made Half-Life 2 free to play until November 18 if you are interested in checking out the 20th anniversary upgrade. As long as you click the download button during the next few days, you will receive the whole sequel experience, including its two expansions, for free.

For many years, Half-Life 2 has been praised as one of Valve’s greatest works and one of the most significant video games ever produced. We rated it as “great” and awarded it a 9.7 out of 10 in our initial assessment. Fans have examined every detail of the first-person sequel since its November 16, 2004 debut, and there will be plenty more to discover when the 20th-anniversary update goes live. The bonuses unveiled today should ease the wait until a sequel is truly disclosed, even though Half-Life 3 has not been officially confirmed to be in development yet. We also rated the VR-only Half-Life: Alyx a perfect ten out of ten.
