After One Year, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened Closes

Just over a year after its worldwide release, Warner Bros. Games has announced the closing of Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, a mobile game.

The collectible card role-playing game Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, created by Zen Studio, was released in the West in June 2023 by Warner Bros. Games’ Portkey Games publishing banner. In the game, you take on the role of a freshman at Hogwarts and gather cards to use as spells during battles.

On August 26, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened was taken down from the Google Play Store and iOS App Store. The servers will remain operational until October 29, 2024. Making in-game purchases is no longer possible.

Chinese game maker NetEase, who is presently making news for allegedly closing down Ouka Studios, the creators of Visions of Mana, handled the game’s Asian distribution. In Asia, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened will still be playable even after it was closed down in the West.

“Millions of fans worldwide have experienced the enchanting voyage of Harry Potter: Magic Awakened with us,” Warner Bros. stated in a statement posted on their assistance website.

“On October 29, 2024, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened will formally shut down its servers in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania. Players in Asia, including the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and other specific Asia and MENA territories, will still be able to access the game.

“We are immensely proud and honored that so many fans all over the world have enjoyed Harry Potter: Magic Awakened with such enthusiasm and passion. We would like to thank those in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania for playing.”

To formally close its servers, Magic Awokened

Players have already voiced their displeasure at the news, demanded refunds, and urged Warner Bros. to permit NetEase to distribute the game in the West or permit server transfers. When asked by IGN regarding the potential of NetEase acquiring the game in the West, Warner Bros. declined to comment and explicitly disclaimed server transfers and refunds in a FAQ.

It’s important to note that Harry Potter: Magic Awakened will close before Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, a brand-new game inspired by the imaginary sport, releases. That will be available on PC and console on September 3.
