Microsoft has unveiled the Sky Cipher Special Edition, a new translucent Xbox controller that brings back fond memories of the original Xbox era. The presale price is currently $69.99 on Amazon, and the release date is August 13.

The transparent blue design of the Sky Cipher is “complemented by metallic accents and silver inside pieces that shine through from inside, emitting an aura of refinement and futuristic appeal,” according to a post made by Daniel Ruiz, senior marketing manager for Xbox Accessories, on Xbox Wire.

Microsoft’s ad touting the new translucent controller starts with the original Xbox bootup animation, playing on console nostalgia. Maybe Microsoft is going to produce a transparent console after this one?

Other than that, Microsoft has been selling the same wireless controller for the Xbox Series X and S for years under the name Sky Cipher Special Edition. It contains a 3.5mm audio port, USB-C connectivity, and a 40-hour battery life.

The Sky Cipher has unveiled a new Xbox controller package design that “embodies our goal to lowering product carbon impact,” in addition to revealing this controller.

The box no longer contains single-use plastics and the typical paper manual has been replaced with a QR code that opens a digital fast start guide. To further lessen its environmental impact, the package has been made 22% smaller and 21% lighter (it was formerly 177mm x 175.4mm x 72mm and 152.3g). The first Xbox controller to arrive in this new packaging is the Sky Cipher.

Microsoft has a long history of producing Xbox controllers that are unique and well-designed, but in recent years, the company has come under fire for concealing some of the more striking features behind competitions on social media. For instance, only contest winners can purchase the new Xbox controllers featuring Deadpool and Wolverine, which were introduced in conjunction with the debut of the MCY film Deadpool & Wolverine.

However, a limited number of Xbox markets globally are now offering pre-orders for the Xbox Wireless Controller – Sky Cipher Special Edition for $69.99.
