Official Mod Support Will Now Allow DOOM Eternal Fans to Rip and Tear

About four years after its initial release, id Software revealed during today’s QuakeCon 2024 broadcast that DOOM Eternal will finally receive official mod support.

The option to choose to enable mod support through Steam’s beta branch is now available in DOOM Eternal Update 6.66 Rev. 3, per a post on Bethesda’s Slayers Club blog. There will be “soon” support for the Microsoft Store version; a console version is not mentioned.

Through the studio Beta program, which you can view above, those who choose to participate in the beta branch will be able to make and share original mods. Here you will find installation instructions and tutorials for idStudio.

Mods should breathe new life into DOOM Eternal, which still has a strong community two years after launch. When DOOM Eternal was first released in 2020, it was well-received for its lengthy single-player campaign and outstanding shooting action.

“Eternal raises its cap to DOOM 2 explicitly while also building off of what made the contemporary remake a breath of new air for the genre,” we noted in our review at the time. It does not matter how long you have been a DOOM player—DOOM Eternal requires your focus.

Since game data released on Steam’s backend alluded to the functionality, fans have been eagerly awaiting official mod support for DOOM Eternal, hoping to add additional weapons, levels, and areas.

How many years has it been since idtech was made officially moddable? Holy crap. Years ago, they had discussed it, but I never imagined that it would happen. One ecstatic fan responded to the announcement by writing, “Eternal’s engine has so much promise and now the modding community may completely delve into it instead of being restricted.” “SteamDB gave us signals that this was coming, but I did not anticipate that they would also provide us with tools.” It’s like a bad dream.”

Not all of QuakeCon’s news was about mod support. Along with these updates, Bethesda unveiled new content, enhanced multiplayer capabilities, and much more for DOOM and DOOM 2. See all of the top games that will be released in 2024 for more information.
